Sunday Funday

Well let's see. I have obviously been on a bit of a hiatus. And will be taking another one in just a few days. But more about that later.

For now let me see if I can find something interesting to talk about. I need to write a post about Charlottesville last weekend to see University of Idaho play UVA.

This weekend has been its usual. Luckily I am heading into a 3 day work week (again- more on that later).

Friday I chopped off my hair again for Lock of Love.I have made this something I am continually doing. I grow my hair out, cut it off and do it all over again. I love the cause that it goes to and it is something I can do for other without even really thinking about it. It has been awhile since I have had really short hair and I am really enjoying the cut I got done. I went to Randolph Cree in Capitol Hill based on yelp reviews and other things I read online that talked about this salon's "home-like" feeling and the stylists ability to "get" what you described. I was fortunate to get an appointment with Even who is a co-owner of the salon and everything lived up to my expectations. The environment of the salon was very inviting and comfortable. Evan was awesome! He listened to what I wanted, looked at the photos I had brought in and made sure I was comfortable with the length he was going to cut ( a nice gesture considering I was losing a fair amount of hair!) and then gave me a great hair cut that I am really enjoying. I think he really understood my need to have something that was low-maintenance, had some movement, went in a ponytail and didn't get poofy. Overall I think that I have found someplace, and someone I will continue to go to for my haircuts.

So now you are all curious of what this new 'do looks like. Well here we go:

(I apologize for the awkward mirror photos-- I didn't have a lot of options for photographers this evening)

I'm kind of digging it. And the fact that I actually look like the mid-20 year old that I am. It's been awhile.

I Felt the Earth Shake Under My Feet

So there was an earthquake if you haven't already heard. It was rather exciting if I do say so. Since DC is not normally a city that experiences earthquakes people were particularly shaken (no pun intended) by this. Even today (as talks shift to our next natural disaster--a hurricane named Irene) people are still talking about where they were right before, when, and right after the 'quake. Rather amusing if you ask me. Just as DC does everything else with a bit of sass...so are people's reactions.

Luckily what I witnessed was very low key. My office building was evacuated and we ended up having to stand on the sidewalks for quite awhile as building inspectors deemed the building "safe". We did have to use the stairs which was a workout for sure when you work on the 8th floor! By the time I headed home most people had fled the city (I kid you not) so the bus was empty and I wasn't caugh in any crazy traffic on the way home. Nothing was wrong with my apartment except for a few items on the floor that weren't there in the morning.

Next up is some crazy wind and rain. Tonight I had to get milk to have cereal for dinner (back to iamanadultandicaneatanddowhatiwant) and I stocked up one "hurricane essentials" (ok ok, rather what I would want to eat if I get stuck in my apartment all weekend with my book and TiVo. Here is what came home:

1 gallon of milk
2 boxes of cereal
1 bag of frozen ready to cook hashbrowns
1 cartoon of eggs
1 pack bacon (a girl needs her sunday morning breakfast!)
Butter (running low- I promise I am not going to start licking butter to stay alive)
1 bottle of white wine
1 package of pre-made chocolate chip cookie dough
1 package of instant pudding

ok so what we have learned. I obviously have no crisis management skills once I am outside of the office. But by damn I can create a disaster management plan for a whole floor of people. Go college degree!

Luckily I don't think I will starve to death between the breakfast food and fatty mcfatterson choices I lugged home.

Anyone having a hurricane party? Nothing better to do when it is pouring rain!

What have I done!!??

Well I have done something that makes me incredibly nervous, scared, excited and happy...

A clue:

Yup. Thanks to a girl at work I got the tip off about BTI in Logan Circle. I can not tell you how excited I am to go take a ballet class tomorrow. I am also really really nervous. I haven't danced in a LONG time. And that last year in college when I was finishing out my minor in dance I was so over the dance department at UW I just didn't care and only went to class to make sure I graduated. I really want to find something here that makes me excited and I am hoping this is it. It is a bit expensive to be getting back into dance, but I figure it is good for my physical and mental health AND maybe I'll make some friends. So class is at 1:30 tomorrow. I did a quick barre tonight just to make sure I haven't forgotten my french :) but I know tomorrow is going to kick my ass. I am going to be so sore and exhausted. But if I like it I am going to go ahead and purchase a class card and hopefully get into the pattern of going more.

As some of you know, ballet/dance was a HUGE part of my life for quite awhile and I honestly have not felt whole since I stopped. But dance in really personal. You have to be comfortable with where you are dancing and who is teaching you. I am praying that BTI is awesome and I love it. Fingers crossed for me people!

Also a round of applause....I have officially lost 15 pounds! Which was my first weight milestone. I have another 15 to go (hopefully this dance thing will contribute!). After moving out here I pretty much ate my emotions for a solid year until I moved. Things are a lot better now but it is just hard to find the time to active things outside of work. I am going to make a big push in the next few months to see if I can jump start the next phase so I can go home for Christmas feeling really great! Anyone up for walks in the evening?

Boise Mall

Now I know this really had nothing to do with Washington D.C., but this blog is about me (ha! How vain!) and I feel it appropriate to blog on where my roots are.

I was catching up on my Idaho news on Idahostatesman.com and found an article this morning about the fate of the sculpture that stood in the entry way at the Boise Towne Center (lame name for the Boise Mall). The sculpture was of two boys swinging on a tire swing. I remember the water pool below them was always filled with coins and if you were going to make a wish it was always lucky if your coin landed on the brass slab that sat just at the waters surface and held the statue up. This fountain was the place where you would meet up at the end of the day when your mom would take you and your 4 little elementary school friends to mall and would let you wander alone freely by yourself and spend your parents money in Claires. When I think back I can vividly imagine what the sculpture looked like and how it seemed quite large at the time.

Well what might you ask has spurred me to take a trip down memory lane concerning the Boise Mall? Well the statue had been removed from the mall when it went through a period of rejuvenation. Strangely, I have visited the mall many times on my trips home, and somehow managed to miss the fact that this icon of childhood was gone from the main entrance. In the article in the statesman they say that the statue has been cut up and is at a recycling center. How strange to have a piece of art go to a recycling center? Really? Way to go Idaho. The mall said they would give it to someone who wanted to put it back together and do something with it, and they had no takers. However the recycling location said that they have had people lining up to take the sculpture. Not even going to ask on what type of advertising the mall did to get people informed about the sculpture. My guess...none at all. Anyways, Tim Woodward, the columnist who reported on this, is taking suggestions for where it should be relocated to. My top three options:
Boise Grove
Boise Train Depot
Somewhere along the Greenbelt
